As the world prepares for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, all eyes have been on China. The international spotlight has renewed controversy over China's role in Tibet, with rallies and protests erupting along the Olympics' torch relay route. Last Friday afternoon, local activists marched nearly nine miles in support of Tibet.
1. April 28, 2008: Around two hundred people gathered at Lhabsoeri for sangsol. 2. To commemorate the completion of 49 days since the protest broke out in Tibet in which over 150 Tibetans were killed, special prayer was organized at Tsuglakhang. Around 5,000 people including 300 monks from Gyuto monastery participated in the prayer. His Holiness the Dalai Lama also attended the prayer meeting. 3. Dharamsala Solidarity Committee organized a special prayer. The most revered Karmapa Rinpoche and many other Lamas, besides 400 monks and 300 laymen also participated in the prayer. 4. A twelve inch statue and two thangkas of THE BODHISATTVA AVALOKITESVARA are created to represent the symbol of new birth of all those Tibetan martyrs who died in the recent killings in Tibet. His Holiness the Dalai Lama blessed the statue and the thangkas (painting scrolls). 5. In the evening around 3,000 people participated in the candle light peace procession. 6. Relay hunger strike continued. 7. Photo exhibition on recent killings in Tibet continued. 8. Continued to offer thousand butter lamps for all those who died in the recent killings in Tibet.
1. April 9, 2008: Press conference was convened at the Press Club of Kolkata. Many media attended the press conference where the members of the Solidarity committee briefed the press on various matters concerning recent killings in Tibet and also about the ongoing human rights violation in Tibet and the Chinese repressive policy in Tibet. 2. April 10, 2008: Executive members of the Kolkata Solidarity Committee acknowledged and responded to all the waiting press at Kunga hotel. They also explained them the reasons for which the entire political activities in Kolkata were cancelled as per a direct order from state government of West Bengal. The entire press group expressed their solidarity and support for the Tibetan movement. 3. April 11, 2008: Mass prayer was organized at the complex of Mahabodhi Society of India. Large number of Tibetan and local Indian including some eminent people like Dr. Rewatha, Ven. Bodhi Pal Beku, and Father Udayeine participated. They also addressed the gathering and expressed their solidarity and support for the Tibetan movement. At the same time, some of the Tibetan also presented plays to describe how Tibetans were being tortured in Tibet and especially the portrayal of recent killings in Tibet in front of Mahabodhi Society of India. Mussoorie –Tibet Martyr’s 49th DayApril 28, 2008 – To mark the 49th day of the Tibetan Martyr’s in the recent crisis in Tibet, the regional Tibetan solidarity committee of Mussoorie organized a daylong prayer session and offered Soltsok (food offering) and 1,000 butterlamps at the Shedup Chophelling temple. The prayers began early morning with local Tibetans, and after school hours the children and staff of Tibetan Homes School and Central School for Tibetans joined the mass prayer. Tibetans believe that 49 days or seven weeks after one passes away, the spirit of deceased is reborn into a new life. On this day, prayers and rituals are conducted for the good rebirth of the souls of the dead. This is one of the most significant funeral rites done for deceased. Mr. Kalsang Norbu, President of the regional solidarity committee took this opportunity to update the gathering on the fresh news from Tibetan Solidarity Committee’s press releases. A total of 1,000 Tibetans had gathered in the final prayers in the evening. Since March 15, 2008, the Tibetan Community in Mussoorie regularly holds protest march, hunger strike, candle light vigil and community prayers for the brave men and women of Tibet who sacrificed their lives in the brutal Chinese crackdown and for the immediate resolution of the Tibetan issue with reunification of Tibetans in and outside of Tibet. The indefinite 24 hrs relay hunger strike by Tibetans in Mussoorie continues at the Library Chowk in Mussoorie. The hunger strike completed its 41st day today.
